Let It Go…

“Forgive all who have offended you, not for them, but for yourself.”  ~ Harriet Nelson

“Hanging onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.”~ Ann Landers

When you forgive, you in no way change the past – but you sure do change the future. ~ Bernard Meltzer

I serve as a lector in my church and the reading I proclaimed last night (COL 3:12-21) started some ideas moving around in my little brain.  The segment of this reading that resonated with me is the following:

 “..Brothers and sisters:
Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,
heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another,
if one has a grievance against another;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. “

A bug's eye view of the mums in bloom and the butterfly garden decoration

Forgiveness helps our spirits to be as free as the little butterfly in the photo!

I think that as I have gotten older, my ability to forgive has increased.  Possibly this is because I have made many more mistakes of my own and done more things for which I myself need to be forgiven.   I’m sure I don’t even want to know how many times something I’ve said has unintentionally hurt someone’s feelings or something I have done has caused someone to feel badly.  I try to make the days of those I come in contact with a little better than they were, but I know I am not always successful.  For those times that I have done or said something hurtful to someone else, I hope that those people can find it in their hearts to forgive me.

In return, I try my best to let go of resentments or hard feelings I have about things others have said or done to me.   It is not always easy because I am only human, but letting go of the resentment and forgiving those people truly does help me to walk with a lighter step and to sleep better at night.  Today’s reading immediately brought one individual to mind with whom I have made many attempts towards building a better relationship only to have the door shut in my face.  Upon reflecting on this situation tonight, I think that the words of Saint Paul encourage me to keep on reaching out with kindness and understanding and patience.   I think there is truth to the following quote.

How does one know if she has forgiven?  You tend to feel sorrow over the circumstance instead of rage, you tend to feel sorry for the person rather than angry with him.  You tend to have nothing left to say about it at all. ~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes

I am getting closer to the point where I don’t get as upset with this individual’s behavior.  I have more of a feeling of pity rather than anger.  I tell myself that living inside this person’s head would be much worse than just dealing with (or not dealing with as the case might be) this person occasionally.  It is not the first time I have had to let go of a person or a situation.  Sometimes despite our best efforts, situations and relationships are not resolved in the way we would like.  Letting go doesn’t mean that I will cut all ties to this person, it simply means that I will let go of my expectation of getting the response I would like.

The new year will be here in less than a week! (Crazy, isn’t it!?)  My resolution is to let go of expectations and to forgive those who have made me feel badly this last year.  I also intend to work on practicing compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience as the reading asked.  Hopefully by doing this, I can start the year with a positive attitude and a renewed spirit, ready for all the new year has to bring!

Happy New Year to All!  Thank you for reading!  May 2014 bring many memorable moments your way!

Weekly Photo Challenge: One

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened. – Anatole France

For this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge, the subject is “One”.  What immediately sprang to mind is how just ONE little puppy has made a world of difference in my life just in the couple months I’ve had him!

Romeo can certainly drive me bonkers sometimes, but he is truly the sweetest little puppy.  I am so happy that he is part of my family now and am so proud of him and how he’s making progress with the potty training by barking when he needs to go outand how he is (for the most part) making amazing progress in Puppy School!  Here’s my One in a million puppy:

Weekly Photo Challenge: Let There Be Light

We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light.  ~Evelyn Dunbar

The WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge this week is “Let There Be Light”  I found some of my favorite images featuring light so I could get an entry into this week’s challenge (last minute, for sure….I’m wearing my “procrastinating pants” today 😉 )  Make sure to check out the other awesome entries at the WordPress site!

Jellyfish

My first image is of an exhibit at the Birch Aquarium in San Diego that I saw this summer.  It featured illuminated jellyfish.  I thought it was pretty unique and enjoyed watching them float around.

An awesome Jack-O-Lantern with the light shining from within!

This photo features my daughter’s Bearded Dragon surrounded by candles during a power outage.  Luckily I was only without power for a little over a day and he managed to stay warm enough to survive!LittleBuddyCandles

My final image is of a nativity display that is set up at Storybook Island, a wonderful children’s park filled with displays of fairy tale and storybook characters.  During the summer, kids can run and play in the park, but during the Christmas season the displays are lit with lights and it is a fun place to walk around, sip hot chocolate and view the lights!Nativity

My First Ever Award for my little blog – the Inspiring Blogger Award

It is with great thanks to Lonnie, aka The Belmont Rooster that I accept my very first blogger award, the Inspiring Blogger Award!

I am humbled and although I am not sure how “inspiring” I am, I hope that at least some of my posts have helped one or two people out.  Sometimes knowing there is someone else experiencing the same things that we are can help us to find the strength to keep on keeping on! 🙂

Accepting this award comes with a few rules, and here they are (as copied from The Belmont Rooster’s Inspiring Blogger Award page!)

1. Thank the person who nominated you and add a link to their blog.
2. Display the award on your post
3 List the award rules so your nominees will know what to do.
4. State 7 things about yourself.
5. Nominate 3 other bloggers for the award. (Ok, I edited this one because many of the bloggers that I find especially inspiring have already been nominated or are “award-free” )  In reality, EVERY single blogger that I follow has inspired me in some way, which is why I’m following.  So, for some amazing blogs, click on any one of the blogs I’m following!!
6. Contact your nominees to let them know you have nominated them. Provide a link to your post.
7. Proudly display the award logo (or buttons) to your blog, wither on your side bar, ABOUT page, or a special page for awards.

So, here goes:

#1 – The Belmont Rooster is an obvious choice for Inspiring Blogger.  His blog description is, “A Blog About Plants & Gardening… And Maybe More.”.  I can tell you that his is my “go-to” site whenever I want to know how to care for any of my garden or house plants, or am wondering what a particular type of plant might be.  I guarantee that if he doesn’t know what it is, he can find out!  And, there definitely is more than gardening info there.  A recent post featured a baby calf being born!  Amazing, and I loved being able to experience that through his wonderful photos!  My small gardens are but a drop compared to his ocean’s worth of photos and plant expertise, but I have learned much already from his extremely helpful and informative site!!

#2 – Here is the Image I chose to post.  There are others available as well.  viba-10

#3 – Rules are listed above! 😉

#4 – State 7 things about myself……..ok…..here goes! 😉

  • I am the oldest child of 4 children.
  • I love musicals, including Disney animated musicals.  I saw “Frozen” with my daughter Aurora last Tuesday and dearly loved it.  I already purchased the soundtrack on iTunes!
  • I play piano.
  • I absolutely CANNOT watch the movie, “What Dreams May Come” without crying.  I shared it with Aurora the other night to see if I could, but I just can’t.  I LOVE that movie!
  • One of my all time favorite quotes is from Mother Teresa, “We can do no great things;  We can do small things with great love.”  I try to live my life that way.  I can’t fix the world’s problems, but if I can make a difference to just one person, my life hasn’t been wasted.
  • When I’m told I can’t do something, I get stubborn and want to prove that I can.
  • I have a knack for getting people to open up to me.  I think it’s because I like to listen to what people have to say and I absolutely love it when people ask me for advice.  (Maybe I was an advice columnist in a previous life. Ha ha ha!) 😉

5. – Nominate 3 other bloggers for the award:

  • Igniting Hope Today – Very inspiring blog with great advice for being the best person you can be!  (And, lucky me, this is my sweetheart!)
  • Photos and Writings by Wendy Premo Larson – Beautiful photography and inspiring words.  Simply done, but spectacular!
  • Misty and Sugar: The Puppy Adventures – I think it’s impossible not to be inspired by a puppy mommy raising TWO puppies at once!  I struggle with my one little guy, so imagining twice the work is definitely an inspiration for ME to rise to the challenge of mothering just one little guy!

#6 – Contact your nominies.   As soon as I get this posted, links will be going out to them! 🙂

#7 – Proudly display the logo.  For now it’s on this post and after following the wonderful instructions on The Belmont Rooster’s Inspiring Blogger Award Post, I shall have a link on the side of my page (hopefully 😉 )

Patience, Patience, Patience….if only saying the words could increase mine!

The life skill I’m currently working on, and failing at badly some days, is patience.  I consider myself a fairly patient person and don’t get worked up too often, but this new little puppy is testing me and mine.   He is adorable and I have to remind myself that his misbehavior is a direct result of my failure to adapt the environment and my actions into those that will prevent this misbehavior.

Romeo sitting nicely waiting for me to throw his toy.

This afternoon was an especially trying one and unfortunately I was not pleased at how I reacted to it.  I found myself yelling at my poor little puppy after he ran away from me and continued running while I tried to catch him.  Several times he got close to the street in front of my house, which thankfully was not too busy today.  He does have a leash (which will be on him at ALL times when he is outdoors now), but I didn’t have it on him.  I was so angry at him for running away from me, but it really wasn’t his fault.  He was acting like the playful puppy he is.  I was the one at fault for neglecting to put the leash on him.  I apologized to Romeo for flipping out and like the sweet puppy he is, he seemed to forget and forgive in the shake of his cute little tail!  I think he will be training me at the same time I’m attempting to train him!

In the meantime, here are some good quotes on patience:

Patience can’t be acquired overnight.  It is just like building up a muscle.  Every day you need to work on it. – Eknath Easwaran

Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. – St. Francis de Sales

Patience is the ability to count down before you blast off. – Author Unknown

Patience is necessary, and one cannot reap immediately where one has sown. – Soren Kierkegaard

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion.  These three are your greatest treasures.  – Lao Tzu

Words of wisdom that I definitely need to take to heart!  While I’m working on patience, I’d welcome any and all advice on puppy training that I can get.  I’ve watched a couple videos and am making progress with potty training.  I’ve also gotten him to sit, shake and lay down (prompted by treats).  My biggest challenge now is getting him to come to me instead of running around like a little wild child.

Romeo, a Papillon puppy, became a member of our family on October 13, 2013.  His first few days were a little stressfull for him and for us, but now that he has his crate and he feels a little more secure, all is well and we already can’t imagine life without him!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Good Morning!

This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge happens to be Good Morning!  Most mornings for me start out with me getting out of bed and turning my alarm off and then going about the usual morning activities; getting dressed, fixing my hair, doing my makeup, feeding the animals, etc.  Today was a little different.

October Blizzard! It looks like a frozen wasteland outside! Incredible amounts of snow!

Starting Friday morning and continuing through Saturday afternoon, Rapid City received a massive amount of snowfall, which is usually unheard of at this time of year.  I’ve heard up to 30 inches of snow fell in Rapid City and over 40 in the surrounding hills!  Craziness!!  So, for me, this morning started out with me getting up, getting dressed, putting on my boots, getting my shovel and helping to unbury my car and work towards getting my driveway cleared of snow.   My dad VERY generously offered to help and brought his snowblower over to my house.  It saved me a tremendous amount of time!  I am so grateful for his help and so grateful to have power again after about 27 hours of it being out.

I made a little bit of progress Saturday afternoon!

I will be able to get out and about once again! It was a productive morning! 🙂

Not a typical morning, but a good one with a sense of accomplishment!! 🙂

There’s no place like home – The Beautiful Black Hills of SD

I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes.

~e.e. cummings

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home;
A charm from the sky seems to hallow us there,
Which, seek through the world, is ne’er met with elsewhere.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There’s no place like home, oh, there’s no place like home!

~ John Howard Payne

Today I was fortunate to be able to spend some time in the beautiful Black Hills while participating in the very first Fall Volksmarch at Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer, SD.   I feel very fortunate that such gorgeous views are only a short drive away for me!

A step off the positive path………….my rant about rudeness!!!

I try to keep things upbeat and positive on here, but something happened today that has been bothering me for a good part of the day, so please forgive the step off the positive path and allow me a moment to vent.

Here’s the scenario.  Three of us from work went to lunch with a top member of a  professional organization to discuss upcoming matters at work.  The three of us were being treated by this individual and a coworker of his.  They took us to Olive Garden (yum!) and lunch started out pleasantly enough.  We ordered beverages and the waiter (Ben) brought the drinks to the table.  He successfully delivered four of the five drinks and then his tray tipped and the last drink, an ice tea, crashed down on the table covering nearly the entire surface and spilling a bit on my seatmate (also my Dad…yes, I work in a family business!).  The waiter was horrified, apologized profusely and got a rag to clean up the mess.  We all scooted into the adjoining booth.  No harm, no foul.  Mistakes happen.  My Dad, being the super calm, nice person that he is, didn’t complain a bit.  When the manager on duty came over to inquire if anyone got spilled on, I told her that Dad had just gotten a little bit on him and Dad quickly said that it wasn’t a problem.  She said that she would make sure we had a pleasant lunch.   We continued our discussion and then received the yummy breadsticks and salad.  No problems.

When the main dishes were brought out, the waiter had someone helping him by holding the tray while he served the meals.  Already nervous at this point, I’m sure, when he was serving the person across from me, the plate slipped a bit and ended up on top of the plate of the gentleman at the end of the booth, the one who would be paying for the meal.  Ben quickly grabbed the plate and delivered it safely to its recipient.  All the other dishes were passed across with no additional problems.

Fast forward to the end of the meal.  Our benefactor received the ticket and commented that my Dad’s meal had been credited.   Then, a tray full of Olive Garden’s delicious little dessert cups was delivered to us.  The managers on duty both stopped over to make sure that everything was ok with the meal and said they hoped that the dessert would make up for any problems with our meal.  I thought that was a very generous gesture and was very satisfied with the way we had been treated and with the service we received.

Upon leaving the restaurant, Mr. Corporate Bigwig informed all of us that he didn’t leave any tip.  I was speechless.  What the heck? Seriously?????  You received one of the meals for free, along with a free dessert and yet you leave ZERO for the hard working waiter???!

My impression of Mr. Bigwig after lunch today. (No offense to the donkey pictured!)

My impression of Mr. Bigwig after lunch today. (No offense to the donkey pictured!)

Yes, there were a couple mistakes, but apologies were made and I believe a more than generous restitution was made.   It bothered me for a couple hours after we got back to the office.  I could only imagine how bad our server felt.  He had probably received a reprimand from his manager and then to top it off was completely stiffed for his tip. 😦   It bothered me so much, I decided to do something about it.  I called Olive Garden and spoke with the pleasant lady who answered the phone and I explained my situation.  I said that I felt badly that our waiter received no tip just because he made a couple mistakes.  I said that I wanted to let him know that we were all (with the exception of the uncompassionate person who paid the bill) very satisfied with the service we received.  I didn’t want him to be discouraged.  I wanted to send him a tip, but at that point I couldn’t remember his name.   I was given a manager, the very person who had delivered the dessert to our table.  She explained that Ben had only been working for a week and was still learning.  She also said that he had seemed down this afternoon and when she asked if he was ok he had replied that he was, but she said she could tell he wasn’t his usual self.   She also reiterated that she had hoped the free meal and dessert would have been enough to make up for the mistakes.  I told her that it absolutely was.  I told her about how I found out that the gentleman(?) who paid the bill left no tip and asked if I could send a check for a tip for Ben.  She explained that they don’t accept checks, so I asked if I could just write it out to Ben and send it to Olive Garden.  She was very happy with that idea and said that she would let Ben know.  I hope that when Ben receives that check tomorrow or the day after it may help redeem his faith in humanity and let him know that there are compassionate people in the world.  Making mistakes is part of the human condition and I believe that Mr. Bigwig needs to step off his high horse and realize that he is human as well and has no doubt made mistakes of his own and should be tolerant when others make mistakes.

Ok, I’ll get off the road of rambling rants and back onto the positive path.  Just sayin’ when people try their best, we need to be tolerant of little mistakes! 🙂   It’s that “do unto others thing” again!  I wish all people could practice it!
