Window

Here is a photo I took of an ancient Roman window still standing in Les Baux de Provence, France.  The writing on the window says “After Darkness, Light”  I found a few other window quotes to go along with it.  Enjoy! 🙂

A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside. ~ Denis Waitley

If a window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade. ~ Tom Peters

My mother and I could always look out the same window without ever seeing the same thing. ~ Gloria Swanson

Don’t waste a minute not being happy.  If one window closes, rush to the next window – or break down a door. ~ Brooke Shields

World Vision: Sponsor A Child

I have thought many times about sponsoring a child, but the thought came in and out of my head without any action being taken on my part.

After listening to the wonderful, inspirational words of Immaculée Ilibagiza the other night, I cannot ignore that little thought any longer.  I have been so blessed and have so much to be thankful for.  I probably throw away more food each week than these children have to eat.  For barely over one dollar a day, I can make a difference in the life of a child.  I put myself in the shoes of the parents of these children and think how difficult it would be for me to see my children going without the basic necessities; food, shelter, education.

There are so many deserving children, and I wish I had the resources to help them all, but for now I chose Ernest, a nine year old boy in Albania.  He has the brightest eyes and the most adorable smile and reminds me a lot of one of my nephews.   Through the World Vision child sponsorship, I will be able to communicate with Ernest and to send letters and small gifts if I choose to.   I feel a little selfish because I know that we are meant to give without needing to see the results of our giving, but I’m excited to be able to learn about him, his family and his country.

I am much too ignorant about the many other countries in the world and the people in them.  I hope by this small effort, I can make at least a bit of difference.  I remember a story about a child and a starfish that goes as follows (original story by Loren Eisley in The Star Thrower):

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

He called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.  The surf is up and the tide is going out.  If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
“The man said,  “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?  You can’t make a difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.  Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”

I first heard this story many years ago when I was in training to be a foster parent.   It is so true that while we cannot save the world, we can make a difference to those we do come in contact with, or to those we help through sponsorship.

If you have a little voice inside that’s telling you to at least take a look at the children in need of sponsorship, please click on the link above and look at some of the adorable children that are in need of help.  But for the grace of God, they could be our own.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is “Inside”.  The most impressive structure I’ve ever been inside is the Colosseum in Rome.  One can almost imagine while walking around how loud it must have been when filled with gladiators fighting lions or even ships (yes, ships) battling one another!  The tiny people scattered here and there give a bit of perspective to how massive the Colosseum really is!

RX for a Better World – Follow the Golden Rule

According to Dictionary.reference.com, the Golden Rule is defined as follows:

golden rule

noun 1.a rule of ethical conduct, usually phrased “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,”   or, as in theSermon on the Mount, “Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so unto them.” Matt. 7:12; Luke 6:31.
I believe our lives could be as calm as the sea in this photo if we learn to live by the Golden Rule!

I believe our lives could be as calm asthe sea in this photo if we learn to live by the Golden Rule!

I had the opportunity to hear Immaculée Ilibagiza speak last Wednesday night.  What a dynamic, positive person she is.  In the Rwanda genocide she lost almost her entire family and only survived by hiding with 7 other women in a tiny bathroom for 91 days.  Through prayer and contemplation, she was able to forgive those who murdered her family.   I have no idea if I could possibly come to that point, even after a much longer time.  She is definitely an exceptional person.  I bought her first book, “Left To Tell” and am looking forward to reading her story.

“The love of a single heart can make a world of difference.”  – Immaculée Ilibagiza (in her book Left To Tell)

She made so many good, thought-provoking comments during her talk and really touched me and helped me to see things in a different light.  After listening to her presentation, I want to be a better person.  I want to be more like she is, more giving, more forgiving, more grateful for all that I have.  I really started thinking, that if we all were to try to live by the Golden Rule, it truly would be a gentler, kinder world.  There is an old Native American proverb that says,

“Don’t judge any man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins.”

By ascribing the best motives instead of the worst to those we encounter throughout the day, we may find that we have more compassion and patience.   Perhaps that server that wasn’t the most attentive when we were at lunch was distracted by the health problems of a family member or perhaps has no family in town to help with his/her children.  Perhaps the bank teller that was less than friendly to us was just verbally assaulted by an angry customer before us.   Perhaps our surly sons or daughters were just scolded by a teacher, snubbed by a friend or tripped over their shoelaces before coming out of school.   I’m certainly not excusing bad behavior, but I think by responding with a shrug or a smile or an understanding word, we might be able to be the one that turns the other person’s day around for the better.

Compassion for others, as stated in the Golden Rule, is taught in nearly every religion.  Author and self studied theologian, Karen Armstrong, in her book The Spiral Staircase talks about compassion being a central theme in all great religions.  She explains it in the following quote from her book. “The Golden Rule requires that every time we are tempted to say or do something unpleasant about a rival, an annoying colleague, or a country with which we are at war, we should ask ourselves how we should like this said of or done to ourselves, and refrain.”  If we would take these words to heart next time the thought crosses our minds to be unkind or to say something that is hurtful and hold our tongues instead, just think of the positive impact it would have in our families, neighborhoods, cities, countries and in fact the whole world.

Wise Words for Wednesday (Yes, I love alliteration!)

It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live. ~Marcus Aurelius

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. ~Marcus Aurelius

The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.
~Marcus Aurelius

Do every act of your life as if it were your last. ~ Marcus Aurelius

Our life is what our thoughts make it. ~ Marcus Aurelius

The only wealth which you will keep forever is the wealth you have given away. ~ Marcus Aurelius

Whatever the universal nature assigns to any man at any time is for the good of that man at that time. ~ Marcus Aurelius

A veiw from the Colosseum in Rome

A veiw from the Colosseum in Rome

I’m in a bit of a contemplative mood this afternoon and was reading some wonderful quotes from Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161-180.  According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, his work “The Meditations, the thoughts of a philosopher-king, have been considered by many generations one of the great books of all times.”  I wasn’t really looking for a history lesson today, but I think there is much wisdom in his words.  I hope you enjoy them too.

The photo was taken while I was inside the Colosseum in Rome, looking out over the city.  I thought a view from Rome would be a nice complement to Marcus Aurelius’ words! 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: An Unusual POV

When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money.

That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is – everything around you that you call life, was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

The minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will, you know if you push in, something will pop out the other side, that you can change it, you can mold it. That’s maybe the most important thing. It’s to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it.

I think that’s very important and however you learn that, once you learn it, you’ll want to change life and make it better, cause it’s kind of messed up, in a lot of ways. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.

— Steve Jobs

I had fun with the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge this week!  The challenge is to show something from a different point of view, different angle, or some way that gives a different perspective to the subject.  I grabbed my camera and took a few pictures around my yard, striving to capture an angle not usually seen.

I thought the quote above from Steve Jobs was especially fitting for this challenge, since he talks of not being afraid to use your ideas to change things and make it better.  It is the ones with the unique perspective and the talent to see things differently that can bring about the needed change in the world! 🙂

Check out the WordPress site in the link above to see the other (probably much more brilliant) entries this week and remember that all points of view have value and can help us to see things in a new way if we are open to it! 🙂  Have a wonderful week!

While visiting Mount Rushmore National Memorial to view the evening lighting ceremony, we were lucky enough to get to see a mother mountain goat and her baby grazing on some prairie grass near the entrance.    The lighting ceremony was very impressive and we were all glad to have the chance to see it, but I’m glad we had our eyes open and were able to also see a tender moment from nature as well! 🙂

When was the last time you spent a quiet moment just doing nothing – just sitting and looking at the sea, or watching the wind blowing the tree limbs, or waves rippling on a pond, a flickering candle or children playing in the park?                            – Ralph Marston

In this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge, we are asked to: share a photo which means SEA to you!   I couldn’t limit it to just one photo, so I’m sharing some of my favorite photos of the sea/ocean.  I hope you like enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them! 🙂

Here’s my submission for the Sunday Stills Challenge, “Backs of Things”.  Obviously the photo shows people, not things.   This photo shows my three kids walking around the beautiful hotel area we were in courtesy of Delta Airlines and their plane whose landing gear didn’t want to work.  Because of that not so fun thing, we got to enjoy an extra day in San Diego and the lovely area around the docks.

Reach your destination one step at a time!

A staircase leading to...

A staircase leading to…

The vision must be followed by the venture.   It is not enough to stare up the steps-we must step up the stairs. – Vance Havner

What an excellent bit of advice!  I think so often we know the steps we need to take in order to achieve the goals we want to in life, but it’s difficult to put one foot in front of the other and take those steps sometimes.   Even baby steps will help us reach our destination faster than just standing still! 🙂   I thought this photo that I took in a park in Italy was an excellent illustration to accompany the quote.

I wish you all the best of luck in finding the courage to take the steps you need to climb the stairs towards your goals! 🙂

Daily Prompt: Learning

May, 1990 – My college graduation with my sister, two brothers and brother-in-law (WOW…..we sure were young way back then!! 😉 )

Today’s WordPress Daily Prompt is as follows:

Another school semester will soon begin. If you’re in school, are you looking forward to starting classes? If you’re out of school, what do you miss about it — or are you glad those days are over?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us LEARNING.

Here’s a photo of my college graduation from Southwest State University (now SMSU) in Marshall, MN, May 1990.  This marked the end of my formal education, but I’ve never stopped learning.   I still enjoy taking community education classes and learning about new things in these classes or from other people or online or anywhere I can glean a bit of knowledge.  Really, I think our brains start to atrophy when we stop learning, so feeding them new information keeps them fit and fabulous!
