Daily Prompt: A fly on the wall

ELO Discovery (1979) – Featuring the awesome songs “Shine A Little Love”, “Confusion”, “Last Train to London”, “Don’t Bring Me Down” and my all time favorite “Midnight Blue”

ELO Time Album (1981) – Featuring the all time great songs “The Way Life’s Meant To Be”, “Rain Is Falling”, “The Lights Go Down” and “Hold On Tight”

Today’s WordPress Daily Prompt: Fly On The Wall asks If you could be a “fly on the wall” anywhere and at any time in history, where and when would you choose?”

While I realize this leaves a HUGE variety of times and places to choose from, and I also realize that my choice may seem trivial,  I choose to be at the tour for Electric Light Orchestra’s Time album. Actually, I’d just attach myself to a small corner in the ELO tour bus from October 1, 1981 to November 8th, 1981 and fly out each night to see all 30 of the shows on the tour!

I first developed an appreciation for ELO around 7th grade.  I was a bit of a misfit; well, no, pretty much a total misfit and I could escape and find my happy place in their amazing synthesized melodies and harmonies.   After hearing “Shine A Little Love”, I wanted to hear more and soon purchased the “Discovery” album.   I was hooked!  Later in 1981, ELO released the Time album and along with that album release was a tour.  I read all about it in Dynamite, a wonderful magazine for telling those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s who and what was cool!  I remember the article about ELO and the poster (every issue had one or two posters!) that showed the band performing in a stage made to look like a giant UFO.  SO INCREDIBLY AWESOME!  I used to listen to the songs on that album over and over and over again and imagine myself enjoying their concert firsthand.   I never did get to see ELO perform live on stage, but if I were a fly on the wall, I’d be right there!

How about you?  Would you opt for a more significant historical moment or would you choose a moment with more personal value?

My entry this week in the Weekly Photo Challenge: Carefree    These photos were taken in June, 2012 at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, OR.  It was a fun, relaxing, carefree vacation.  The dark rocks are basalt pebbles and when the tide came in they made a noise similar to applause.   We all had a great time and made many memories, so for me this is the perfect example of a carefree summer day! 🙂

Rah Rah RAS!! (or How to train your brain!)

A Blue Honda

A Blue Honda

The RAS, aka Reticular Activating System, is the part of our brain that brings relevant information to our attention.  In her amazing book, Write It Down, Make It Happen, Henriette Anne Klauser explains how the RAS works using the example of a blue Honda.  She describes the phenomena in which you buy a blue Honda and shortly after doing so see blue Hondas on seemingly every corner.  This is the RAS at work.  There are no more blue Hondas on the streets than there were before. Because you are more aware of blue Hondas now that you have your own, the RAS acts as a filter and determines that blue Hondas are important to you and therefore brings them to your attention now instead of relegating them to the background as it did before you owned your own blue Honda.   Emotion being attached to something makes the RAS that much more determined to help you notice those things in your environment.

This is GREAT news for us when setting goals for ourselves because we can train the RAS to look for the things we want to attain.  We can train it by making a list of the things we want in life or by making our own vision board; something as simple as a piece of paper on which we place pictures of things we want to have or to do.   This gives our brain the message via the RAS to be alert for these things and for people, places and circumstances that can help us to get these things or have these experiences.

This worked for me just this week!  I am a fan of psychic John Edward and was fortunate enough to see him in Vegas a few years back.   I check now and then to see if he will be back in Vegas or anywhere else that is within affordable travelling distance.  Vegas isn’t too bad for me since Rapid City is a hub for Allegiant Air which has less expensive but very limited flights to Vegas.   I follow John Edward on Facebook and saw approximately a week ago that he was going to have an event in Vegas on December 7th.  I have a little box on my dresser that I put my goals, wishes and intentions in.  That night before I went to bed, I wrote on a small slip of paper, “See John Edward in Vegas”, folded it up and put it inside the box.   The following evening I checked the Allegiant Air site and found that there was a flight on the 6th and on the 8th, so I would only need to stay for two nights.  The flight on the 6th was an evening flight, so I wouldn’t even have to miss any work.  Hmmmm, I started to think this just might work out.

Now I just needed to find someone to go with me.  My sweetheart couldn’t commit to the date, but I really wanted to grab this opportunity.  I sent a plea to my Facebook family and friends asking for a volunteer to go with me.    The next morning, I made up my mind that even though I didn’t have a confirmed travel mate, this was something I really wanted to do and, by golly, I was going to do it!   I purchased two tickets to the event.  I did this the morning of the 13th of August.   Shortly after purchasing the two tickets, I saw a Facebook message on my phone from my Aunt Nora saying that she’d love to go but would have to do some checking.   Since the person I would probably most want to hear from would be my maternal Grandma, my heart leapt in excitement thinking I couldn’t find a more perfect companion for the trip.  I replied to the message that it would be awesome if she could come along.  A little while after that, I got a call from my Mom, who was also interested in going.  Double bonus!  With two of her three children there PLUS a granddaughter, my grandma would have extra incentive to come through!  I talked with Mom and she committed to going and got in touch with Nora who also committed to going!  I had to buy one more event ticket now.  My Mom and Dad travel to Vegas twice a year and Mom had a free hotel stay coming from the formerly Fitzgerald’s Casino in Old Vegas.  I’ve never been to Old Vegas, so I’m excited to have the chance to see it!   So, TWO companions instead of one AND free lodging!  But wait……it gets even better!  After seeing a message that I posted on Facebook later that evening about how excited I am for this trip, my sister Susan decided that this would be a great quick getaway and is going to make the trip as well!  Picturing Positive Possibilities really works!! 🙂

One of my favorite sayings is “Ask, Believe, Receive”.  I Asked (getting the RAS revved up and running with my request), Believed (purchased the tickets, having faith that I’d find someone to go with me) and Received (by getting THREE companions instead of the one that I asked for!).   It works!

For more great stories about how to make your dreams realities, I recommend reading Klauser’s book, “Write It Down, Make It Happen”.  Great stories and practical ways to take steps that lead to accomplishing your goals!  Excellent reading (and re-reading…..I refer to it often!)

My second submission for the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge.  This is my daughter Aurora’s “Little Buddy”, a bearded dragon that we’ve had a little over a year.  He’s not so little anymore and I thought he’d make a good subject for this week’s challenge.  I like the second shot better.  He seemed to ham it up for the camera when I was taking these earlier today.  He’s a great subject! 😉

Curses!

The (almost) whole gang (WITH Mom!) at the reunion in North Dakota

The whole gang of us (WITH Mom!) that made it to the reunion in North Dakota

I think my family vacations are cursed.  I seem to have no problem when it is my own immediate family of everything falling into place and running smoothly while on vacation.  When I was married, our family took many vacations with no exceptional circumstances or happenings.  I won a trip to Nashville a few years back and took my friend and coworker Sheree with me and had nary a problem the two days we were there.

It seems to be a different story when two or more people from the family I grew up in travel together.   It seems that when any or all of us travel together, there is some kind of little black cloud hovering that makes a totally trauma-free vacation impossible.  I know, I know, that is crazy talk.  We live in the modern world, free of hexes, curses and the like.  I must be out of my mind.  Maybe so, but I think I can back up my claim with examples.

Here are some happenstances from vacations we took when I was a child:

  • the summer we drove through the desert with no working air conditioner in the car
  • the summer the pool was out-of-order at the campground we stayed at (come to think of it, that might have been the same vacation as the first)
  • the summer we traveled to Canada and the “pop-up” mechanism on our camper stopped working
  • the summer we somehow ended up with sand in the gas tank of our pickup
  • the vacation to Wisconsin Dells, a place filled with “way-cool” water parks in which it rained the entire week we were there
  • the vacation in which we got to the motel late at night and opened the door to our room to find it filled up with mattresses

I remember sitting with my siblings in various service stations while one thing or another was repaired on our vehicles.   I distinctly remember noticing the type of vending machines one service station had and another didn’t.  I do remember that we were pretty happy when a station had a television to watch. 😉

When we travelled with my sister and her family to Disney World over Easter many years ago, the curse seemed to have been in full force.  She was pregnant at the time and as fate would have it, our plane was delayed in getting to the connecting airport and we missed our connecting flight by a mere minute or two after running (yes, literally) through the airport to catch it.  We made it to Atlanta, but then had to go from gate to gate to gate to find a flight that could get us to Orlando.  It never happened.  We finally found a flight to Daytona and had to drive to Orlando, arriving in the wee hours of the morning.

Last year I went on a Mediterranean Cruise with my sister and we added a couple of days in Rome to the package.   The curse struck again as first her ATM card refused to work in the machines there and then she developed a blister on her foot which made walking a painful ordeal; not a good thing in a city where walking is a necessity.  On top of that, after one of our day trips around Rome, we were dropped off far away from our hotel and became disoriented and lost.  That one was my fault as I was totally confused by the map which had pictures of landmarks, but not necessarily the direction that they actually were facing.  As a visual person, I was totally thrown off and my mistake caused us to walk much farther than we needed to.   Thankfully, my sister got to experience a stress free vacation in Rome with her husband later that year.

This past week my family (less one brother, who had to work) travelled to North Dakota for a family reunion.  It was a wonderful time and a great opportunity to see distant relatives again.   My 18-year-old, Nathan, had been complaining that his finger was sore because of a hangnail he had recently removed.  I didn’t think it would be anything serious, so had him take some ibuprofen and didn’t even look at the finger.  Saturday morning it looked terrible and after my cousin and his wife, both medical professionals, looked at it and deemed it worthy of a doctor’s visit, we found an urgent care clinic and got him in there pronto, found out it was definitely infected and got him some antibiotics.  Par for the curse course.

My cousins planned some great activities for all of us and one of these included an arts and crafts fair at the State Capitol building.  There were some amazing artists and craftspeople there and everyone had a wonderful time walking around.   When we got into the vehicles to follow my cousin to the park where a catered lunch was being served, somehow amongst all the people and vehicles, we all got in formation and headed out of the parking lot…… without my mom.    By this time, we had become separated from the convoy and after going back and getting Mom, we formed a new caravan with my sister acting as mother duck and my parents, my carload and my son and his girlfriend following behind like ducklings.  We made it to lunch with no more catastrophes and had a delightful day after that.

The things that have happened, for the most part, provide interesting antecdotes and stories.  Nothing has caused any permanent damage to any family members, so at least if we have a curse following us, it’s a mild one 😉  It’s definitely not enough for me to avoid any trips with the family.  We actually had some pretty fun experiences despite the little setbacks.  If anything, I think it’s taught all of us to learn to be a little better at going with the flow and taking whatever comes along with a smile and a little shrug.  That’s life, after all!

My submission for the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge this week.  The challenge is to submit photos taken at the same time, of the same place, but of a different angle.  I seem to have an affinity for stairs, especially stairs leading upwards, and I happened to have taken these shots at the same time when I visited the Emerald Grotto near Amalfi, Italy.

This makes ME happy! 🙂

These little wonders are my big discovery at the craft fair in Bismarck, ND where I was attending a family reunion.   I’m sure I had the biggest smile on my face as I was happily wandering about the Thomas Ironworks booth.  It’s pretty evident that making these awesome metal creations brings happiness to him, his family and everyone with the good fortune to see them.   If I had a million dollars, I would buy everything he makes and give the duplicates away to my favorite relatives and friends! 😉  It’s probably a good thing that I don’t live in Bismarck because I think visiting their store would probably bankrupt me.  If you are in need of a smile today, click on the above link and check out their Facebook page.  It’s amazing what he has created from some rusty containers and some scrap metal.  Have fun!!

Word Press Daily Prompt: Pat On The Back. I’m so proud of…

Aurora in San Diego, once again making the most of the opportunity to see all the little creatures in the tide pools!

Aurora in San Diego, once again making the most of the opportunity to see all the little creatures in the tide pools!

…my little monkey, aka my daughter, Aurora!  Today she made me especially proud by willing to be open & flexible when her schedule got switched around.  She’s been participating in a Cartooning class at our local Dahl Fine Arts Center from 1-4 PM every day and was anticipating a slow morning at my office until it was time for class in the afternoon.

When I received an email from our local Outdoor Campus (sent at 7:00 am, but first seen by me at 9:00 am!!) saying that a slot in the Rock Climbing Class had opened up for the 10:00-11:00 am slot, I let her know right away.  I expected excitement, but at first was met with apathy.  She wanted to stay at the office and relax instead.   I attempted my very best encouraging voice as I told her that it was a good opportunity, especially since it would be the last class of the summer and she had been wait listed the previous two times we tried to sign her up.

I could almost see the tug of war going on in her cute little head.  She REALLY didn’t want to, but finally she agreed to “go with the flow” and to take advantage of the opportunity.   We dashed back home to get appropriate shoes for climbing since she was wearing flip-flops and then on to the Outdoor Campus!

Turns out she got to scale the wall not just once, but several times and she had a great time doing so!  I’m very proud of her for going to the Rock Climbing class even when she wasn’t initially very enthused about it.  The easier thing to do would have been to lounge around the office, but she didn’t.  By doing so, she learned a great lesson about getting more out of life.   I don’t know if she remembers what the words Carpe Diem mean, but that’s what she did today!  Seize the Day!  Make the most of the opportunities life gives you! 🙂

This post was inspired by the Word Press Daily Prompt.  See more proud people here:
