My Obsession…

I am currently obsessed with the silly little Minions from Despicable Me! They are just too cute!  I made my own Minion, Benny.

As I type this post, I can hear the song, “My Obsession” (by the awesome 80s band, Icehouse) playing in my head.  If you aren’t familiar, check out the video on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZoidII8FOg   It really doesn’t even remotely correlate to Minions, but my thought process has never been easy to follow 😉

My current obsession is not a person, however, it is a little yellow creature called a Minion.

Tonight as I was making my own Minion (Barry – pictured above) at the Chiquita Banana site, I stopped for just a brief moment, feeling a twinge of embarrassment maybe since the website was most likely designed for children, not a 44-year-old woman.  Then I decided it’s not a bad thing that I can be so easily amused.

I don’t know what it is about Minions, but I am truly enamored of those little yellow twinkie-like beings!  I’m not even going to say how many Happy Meals I’ve consumed in the last few weeks while trying to collect the set of Minions. (Did it, by the way! I only have one each of the two purple Minions, but that’s all I need).    My favorite is the one with the banana that, upon pulling on his arms, says “banana, ooh, banana”.   Upon getting this treasured Minion, I had to do this multiple times to the amusement of myself, my daughter and my “also a kid at heart” honey.

Most of the time, I do have to be a grown up, but sometimes it’s ok to just be goofy and act like a kid!  I’ve decided to accept myself, guilty pleasures, kid stuff and all!  There are enough hours in the day to be responsible.  Minions provide a delightful diversion to a dull day! 😉

For further proof that I am a total kid at heart, check out my Minion Pinterest board here!

Do you have any guilty pleasures or things that put you in a childlike stupor?  😉  Your secret is safe with me!

My second post for the Weekly Photo Challenge this week is a masterpiece of nature; leafy sea dragons!  These beautiful little creatures absolutely fascinate me because they look like something from another world.  I had never seen nor heard of anything so exquisite until I saw them at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla, CA.

I hope you enjoy them too!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Masterpiece

Beatutiful Rose at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon France

A photo from my magical moment at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France

http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/07/26/out-of-this-world/

My first attempt at the Weekly Photo Challenge!   I’ve seen the previous topics and enjoyed looking at the variety of interpretations but until now haven’t had anything come to mind that matched the title.  When I read this week’s topic, “Masterpiece”, I immediately thought of this photo.  I took this while touring the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France.  (Yes, I know how fortunate I am to have had that opportunity!) There was a flower festival going on at the time and this lone rose in the window beckoned me.  To me, it’s like a scene right out of Beauty and the Beast.  With the impressive architecture and ancient feeling there, it would be the perfect setting for a fairy tale.

If you host an exchange student, you’ll be sorry…

Celebrating Christmas with Muriel in 2011

Celebrating Christmas with Muriel in 2011

…sorry to see him or her go back home.  The absolute worst part of the hosting that I’ve done is having to say goodbye to the student when the exchange time is over.  The very first exchange student our family hosted was Anja from Rapid City’s sister city, Apolda, Germany.  That was many years ago, the same year my soon to be 21-year-old son, Geoffrey, was starting Kindergarten.  At that time, we weren’t sure that it was the best decision for us.  I mean, we’d almost always seen exchange students with families that had teenagers.  Did we need a teenager to make Anja feel welcome and at home?  Nope!  (In fact, sometimes NOT having another teenager in the house allows more attention for the exchange student, I think.)  In fact, it was the perfect situation.   At the time, we had two boys, our 5-year-old son and his younger brother, Nathan,  who was 3 at the time.  Anja was like a big sister to them and fit into our family without any trouble.   In fact, by the time the school year was over, many people said that Anja sounded more like a valley girl than someone from another country.   I don’t cry very easily at all, but I can tell you that the waterworks were on full blast the day we took Anja to the airport and had to say goodbye.   Our family had the opportunity in February of 2001 to visit Anja and were hosted by her family.  That was such a memorable trip!  Her parents are the loveliest people in the world and her dad, Martin, took us to so many places in Germany, allowing us to see places we certainly never would have found on our own.

The following fall, we signed up to host another student through a different program, this time Gabriel from Ecuador.   At this time, Nathan, our younger son, was going to be starting Kindergarten in the fall.  Shortly before Gabriel arrived, we were asked to host another student temporarily until a home could be found for him.  So, we got to experience two students this time around.  Along with Gabriel, we also hosted Maximilan from Germany.   Both boys were great and fit into the family very well.  We had a bit of a challenge with transportation this time around because Gabriel attended Central High School, and Maximilian attended Stevens High School.  We figured out a way to get Maximilan on the bus before dropping Gabriel and Geoffrey and Nathan off.   Shortly after the two students arrived, we found out that I was pregnant with our daughter, Aurora.   In addition, we moved into a new home that October.  Needless to say, we had a busy household, but we made it work.  In December, another host family was found for Maximilian and Gabriel stayed with us through the school year.  He graduated from Central shortly after our daughter was born.

Fast forward to 2011.  At the time I had been divorced just about 2 years and my life had simplified about as much as it possibly could.  I was in the same  small 3 bedroom house I live in now.  Since one of the bedrooms is my “family room”,  that left the one room for me and the one that my daughter Aurora uses.  When the subject of hosting came up, I wasn’t sure that it would work in my current situation.  I’m happy to say that I decided to give it a try.  I agreed to provide a home for Muriel from Germany who stayed with me from August 2011 to January of 2012.  It was an awesome experience and I’m so glad I opened my home and my heart to her.  Since she was only here for half the school year, the time went by far too quickly!  I’m excited to say that Muriel is going to be back for a visit in August and I’m thrilled to be able to see her again.

I know that there are many agencies currently searching for host families.   While there is definitely time involved in hosting a student, the rewards are many.  Knowing that you can make a difference in the life of a student and watching him or her learn about America and learning from them in turn is wonderful.  I’m still in awe of these young people who are brave enough to travel to a foreign country, one with a language different from their own as well as different customs and culture.   Compared to that, providing a home doesn’t seem like such a big thing.

If you have every wondered if hosting a student is right for you, I encourage you to get more information.  In Rapid City, we have two sister cities; Apolda, Germany and Nikko, Japan.   EF is the organization that Muriel was with and I know there are several other exchange student organizations that would be happy to provide information about hosting!

Apolda Facebook page (no information on hosting here, but I can tell you that it is a very beautiful place to visit!)  If you are in the Rapid City area, watch the Rapid City Journal.   That was how we discovered that host families were needed.

EF Foundation – I know they need host families and would encourage you to check it out!

If you have any questions about hosting that I can answer, I’m happy to help out.

I’d love to hear from you, but please don’t call me.

A Cisco 7960G IP telephone

A Cisco 7960G IP telephone (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I have a confession.  I really really really (with emphasis!!) don’t like to talk on the telephone.  There are many out there who would and sometimes do talk for hours on end about things both big and small, important and trivial.  My Mom and my Aunt Nora talk on the phone every day and their days are incomplete unless they connect over the phone.  I’m not one of those people.  Unless there is something that absolutely has to be done or an appointment that must be scheduled, I could go for days without picking up talking on my phone.

I use my phone throughout the day for listening to my iTunes, texting, checking movie times and checking on my blog.  It is also my alarm clock and wakes me up every morning with Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” when I don’t get up before that and turn the alarm off.   I really like my phone, and I like the people who I have to talk to on it.   I think part of the reason I’m not a big “phone person” is the fact that I don’t care much for small talk.   I love a good heart to heart, but I prefer to talk in person instead of on the phone.  Maybe old age is creeping up on me, but I sometimes don’t seem to be able to hear people very well on the phone.   I have real trouble with people using the bluetooth devices.  Sometimes while I’m trying to talk to someone who is using one of those, I might as well be talking to someone inside a tunnel who is talking with a mouthful of cotton.   While I’m trying to understand what the person just said to me, said person goes quiet, waiting for my response to a question that was apparently asked.  Awkward silence ensues until I finally have to admit that I didn’t hear and have no idea what was said.

For me, the telephone is best used a little bit at a time to convey pertinent information to another person.  Tell me what/when/where/who/how long?  That’s all I need to know.   Probably my lack of social finesse and inability to perfect small talk is the reason I have a smaller circle of friends than others.  It seems that I am in the minority, or at least I feel that way most of the time when I see those around me with their phones seemingly glued to the sides of their heads.  Also, methods of communication like texting and email give me something to look at to confirm details.  My analytical/nitpicky Virgo traits make me feel much better when I have details in front of me that I can read and rely on rather than my memory of a phone conversation which may or may not have been heard correctly.

Ok, I’m stepping out of the confessional.  Please don’t judge me too harshly.  I like you, I really really like you.  I just prefer to connect with you in any other way than over the phone. 😉

When Mother Nature gives you sunflowers…

This is Mother Nature's way of letting me know that I have a LONG way to go before I'm a Master Gardener!

Gardening EPIC FAIL! This is Mother Nature’s way of letting me know that I have a LONG way to go before I’m a Master Gardener!

don’t try to transplant them!!!

Every time I start to think I’m a Master Gardener, Mother Nature, life, karma, what have you, sends me a very clear message that I’m just a little gardening novice in the grand scheme of the gardening universe!

This (formerly beautiful) sunflower was starting to grow a few steps outside my back garage door and I let it go for far too long because I love sunflowers.  Yesterday, I got the brilliant idea to transplant it to the space formerly occupied by some tulips and daffodils.

As you can see, the resulting horror will keep me from getting a big head (when it comes to gardening, anyway!) 😉 And from now on, I will let the sunflowers bloom where they plant themselves 😉

A volunteer sunflower, probably from seeds dropped by one of my fine feathered friends!

A volunteer sunflower, probably from seeds dropped by one of my fine feathered friends! I’ve learned my lesson, so this one gets to live out the rest of its days with no fear of me and my transplanting shovel of doom.

Learning to let go.

One of the neatest things I saw at the San Diego Zoo wasn't even on display there! Just like with my vacations, sometimes in life I have to be open to things I haven't planned.

One of the neatest things I saw at the San Diego Zoo wasn’t even on display there! Just like with my vacations, sometimes in life I have to be open to things I haven’t planned.

As I’ve said in the past, I’m a planner.  Not just vacations, weekends or menus but also life in general.  I have a picture of how I want my life to go.

Too often for me, though, my expectations are vastly different from the way my life unfurls.  Some things are beyond my control, and as much as I don’t like it, I have to accept it and learn to let go of my expectations.

I wish I could say that I’m one of those people who easily adapts to whatever life has in store.  Of course that’s the ideal, but that’s not always how I deal 😉

I try my best to picture the positive possibilities, but I admit that I can sometimes slip into the black abyss of doom and gloom or stinkin’ thinkin’.  I find that when life gets too out of control for me and I don’t seem to be able to do anything about it, it’s ok sometimes to just take a little time to throw myself a pity party.  I don’t allow myself too much time for this because it’s completely non-productive and gets me nowhere, nevertheless, I need that sometimes.

After I’m done wallowing, I try to inspire myself to get back up and try, try again.  Here are a few quotes that have helped me in the past.

“The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

“There is nothing permanent except change.” ~
Heraditus

“Judge each day not by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

“Change your thoughts and you change your world.” ~ Norman Vincent Peale

“To be able to move on, one has to learn to forgive not only the person (or people) who have done one wrong but also oneself.” ~ Eugenia Tripputi

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain

“I know God won’t give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish He didn’t trust me so much.” ~ Mother Teresa

“We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love.” ~ Mother Teresa

“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.” ~ Mother Teresa

The last two quotes by Mother Teresa are great ones, I think, because by focusing on others and what I can do for them, I stop being self-centered and moping over things I cannot change.  Ultimately, I can usually pull myself out of my little slumps by remembering that there is a reason for everything that happens, even when I don’t understand the reason.  By finding a way to make someone else’s day a little brighter, I can often shrug off the cloud of self-pity and brighten my own day as well.

Do you have any favorite “pick me up” quotes or ways that you pull yourself out of a slump?  I’d love to hear about it!

I’m not the grammar police (or at least I’m TRYING my best not to be!)

It sometimes takes everything I’ve got not to correct people when they make horrible mistakes with grammar.  Many of you know what I’m talking about:  your instead of you’re (your welcome), there instead of they’re (there going to love this), to instead of too (to funny).   These grammatical errors are like nails on a chalkboard to me.  Inside I’m cringing and feel like the little guy in the following cartoon.

If you too (not to) appreciate proper grammar, you may enjoy my Pinterest page of grammar humor.  Grammar Humor

Here’s one from that page that uses humor to help the challenged use the correct word in their communication! 😉

I harbor no ill will toward these well-meaning but grammatically challenged folk out there.  I just have to remind myself that they are not my children and will most likely not thank me for showing them the error of their (not there) ways! 😉

Keeping my eye on you…..

I love this photo! I couldn't have gotten the mama seagull craning her neck around if I tried, but she did it just as I snapped the photo.

I love this photo! I couldn’t have gotten the mama seagull craning her neck around if I tried, but she did it just as I snapped the photo.

Apparently it’s true, even in nature, that mothers have eyes in the back of their heads, or at least manage somehow to always keep an eye on what the little ones are doing 😉   This mama seagull keeps a close watch on her babies 🙂

When I captured this moment, it made me smile.  Hope it does the same for you!

The Law of The Garbage Truck

What an awesome perspective! This taxi driver has a wonderfully unique outlook and one that I’m going to try to adopt myself! Wonderful post!!

morningstoryanddilbert's avatarMorning Story and Dilbert

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you’re the Terminator, for an instant you’re probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly she can get back her focus on what’s important.

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here’s what happened. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car’s back end by just inches!

The driver of the other car, the guy who…
